For more than two decades, my Burson-Marsteller colleagues in China have effectively served a significant group of clients – mainly global corporations of varied national origin – in a market environment that calls for extraordinary skills and commitment. Strategically, we received great benefits during our contracted eight-year joint venture relationship with Xinhua, China’s official news agency. We take pride in having trained the executive staff of China Global Public Relations, now an affiliate of Xinhua.

We can also take pride in having developed a staff of more than one hundred home-grown public relations professionals. Our mission from the outset followed our practice from the time we started our first office outside the United States in 1961: to manage and staff each Burson-Marsteller office with local nationals so that we are the equivalent of a local business, steeped in the language, the business practices and the culture of our host country.

China is one of our most rapidly growing markets where, increasingly, we serve China-owned clients as well as the multinationals that have formed a large part of our client base over the last twenty plus years.   My confidence is based on our people and their adherence to a methodology, a culture and a work ethic that well-serves both our clients and the public interest.   To those who committed their knowledge and their energy to Burson-Marsteller China in years past, to those who are now carrying on this tradition in our offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu, and to those who will do so in the future, I take this opportunity to express my admiration, appreciation and affection.
